A New Place To Sit At Cafe Atlantique

When you’re ready for a friendly place to grab a quick cup of coffee or linger with a delicious sandwich, there’s no better place to stop then Cafe Atlantique in downtown Milford.  For the next month, there will be an extra seat to enjoy your cup of coffee.

The new seat was built by the tech ed department at Jonathon Law High School (special thanks to Mark Robinson and Joe Barcello) and painted by the campers at Camp Happiness for the Milford Education Foundation’s Chair-ity Auction.  The chair will be available to sit in after the Chair-ity Auction Kickoff Event being held at the Milford Arts Council on July 26th from 6p-9p.  When you pass by the chair you won’t be able to help but be happy as you take a peek at the rainbow painted chair.

Go ahead, take a seat.  It’s too comfortable to get up from right?  What if you could have this wonderful chair on your patio this fall and in the process support the Milford Education Foundation’s Teacher Mini-Grants?

Top 5 Reasons To Support Our Chair-ity Auction

Since it’s inception the Milford Education Foundation has been fostering creativity and educational curiosity among the students of the Milford community.  Each year we invite students and families of all ages to participate in a variety of events that inspire fun and explode their imaginations.

One of the ways we fund these events throughout the year is through our bi-annual event called the Chair-ity Auction.  The event, which raised $13,000 in its first year, is our biggest fundraising effort.  

So, why should you support it?  

  1. The money raised supports our teacher mini-grants which allow teachers throughout the city of Milford to apply for a grant to fund an activity/the purchase of an item that they otherwise would not be able to provide for their students.
  2. The stunning Adirondack chairs (pictured below) built and painted by area students (among MANY others.)
  3. Our wide array of silent auction items like a Dream Vacation getaway to the French Quarter in New Orleans
  4. An opportunity to meet many of the great minds who are educating the children of our community
  5. Our other wonderful events like Minds In Motion, Invention Convention, and Movie Nights

Supporting the Chair-ity Auction is a way to lend a helping hand to the students of our community while having a wonderful night out and the opportunity to bid on these beautifully appointed Adirondack chairs.

Milford Invention Convention

Milford Invention Convention 2015 Recap

The second annual Milford Invention Convention was held on Saturday, March 28th at Jonathan Law High School. Over 100 children ranging from kindergarten to 7th grade presented their problem-solving ideas in groups—called Judging Circles—to their peers and local judges.  Fourteen young inventors were chosen to represent Milford at the 32nd Annual Connecticut Invention Convention on Saturday, May 2nd at UCONN’s Gampel Pavilion.

MEF partnered with the Milford Public Schools, the Milford Public Library and the Boys & Girls Club of Milford to support workshops and other opportunities designed to inspire invention, innovation and entrepreneurship.

Jake Mendelssohn, Outreach Director for the Connecticut Invention Convention attended Saturday’s event and noted, “What is happening in Milford is an example of what can be accomplished when the public, in this case in the form of the Milford Education Foundation, works together with the public schools toward common goals.”

Milford Wine Trail to benefit MEF

The Milford Education Foundation has been selected as a beneficiary of the 6th Annual Downtown Milford Wine Trail! Along with Milford Promise, MEF will receive a portion of the ticket sale proceeds from this popular event.

Tickets are now on sale at Villa Gourmet at 11 River Street and at Wines & More at 242 Boston Post Road in Milford. Tickets are $40 each and a limited number will be sold.

Your ticket entitles you to sample flights of wine at each shop along with delicious food from a variety of restaurants.

In addition to wine and food at every location, you will receive a commemorative wine glass when you register. All participating retailers will be offering special in-store promotions and sales so this will be a great opportunity to get in some early holiday shopping!

The Milford Education Foundation (MEF) will hold a Chair-ity Auction fundraiser on Friday, August 22nd at Costa Azzurra restaurant in Milford. Attendees will enjoy live music, appetizers and a cash bar while perusing the silent auction items and door prizes. The highlight of the evening will be the live auction of ten hand-crafted and artistically painted Adirondack chairs with special guest auctioneer, Brian Smith. The chairs were built by students at Jonathan Law High School and painted by groups of Milford students under the guidance of artist mentors from the Milford Arts Council. All silent auction items were donated and include, among other items, restaurant gift certificates and vacation spots.

Student artists will help the MEF kick off the summer event with a Chair-ity Preview on Wednesday, July 30th at 7:00 PM at the Milford Fine Arts Council (40 Railroad Ave.).The full collection of chairs will be on display and the artists will be on hand to introduce their designs.

Prior to the Auction, chairs will find homes at Milford businesses. People are encouraged to visit each chair, take a “selfie” and upload it to the Milford Education Foundation Facebook page for a chance to win several exciting prizes. The chairs will come together one last time before the Chair-ity Auction at the Walnut Beach Art Stroll on Thursday, August 21st. Visitors can sit on the extra-large Adirondack chair from Westfield Shopping Center and get their picture taken, compliments of Milford Photo. The winner of the Chair-ity Selfie Contest will also be drawn.

Moneys raised at the auction will help to expand the Milford Education Foundation’s Teacher Mini-Grant program as well as other charitable programs of the MEF. The program launched to much excitement in October 2013 and the first grants, totaling nearly $5,000, were awarded to nine Milford Public Schools teachers earlier this year. Grant recipients presented their projects to program sponsors, Foundation members and their peers in May at MEF’s First Annual Thank-You Breakfast.
