1) DESCRIBE YOUR CONNECTION TO THE COMMUNITY: I have lived in Milford since 2003. My husband, James Maroney, is a life long resident of Milford and has been a small business owner, providing SAT and educational consulting services.
2) DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL CONNECTION TO THE MILFORD PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM: My husband I have a son, who attends public elementary school in Milford. I have been active in the school system, serving as an officer and on various committees of the PTA, as well as room parent for the past 4 years.
3) WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEF EVENT/EXPERIENCE?: It is hard to choose! There are so many great events. One common denominator in MEF’s events is the kids’ joy and love of learning sparked during these hands on educational opportunities. The kids’ sense of wonder and confidence are brought forth during these events, which foster creativity and encourage thinking out of the box. I also love the projects that our passionate, engaged teachers are able to do, thanks to MEF’s mini-grants.
4) WHY DID YOU JOIN THE MEF BOARD?: The roots of Milford Education Foundation can be traced back to many conversations, which started around the kitchen table with my husband James and other like minded parents with children in the Milford Public School system, in 2011. These conversations began when our son was about to start kindergarten. At that time, I had started to research ways in which to help support his education. This led to learning more about communities with successful school systems, and factors which contribute to helping each child learn to their full potential. Engaging parents and providing enriching educational opportunities are just some of the many ways in which we can support education at home and in our community. We shared what we learned with others, and found many like minded parents, teachers, and community members who also shared a vision of promoting a culture of educational excellence, creativity, and life long love of learning. After attending conferences and reaching out to several communities, we learned about education foundations, which are established in school systems throughout Connecticut, as well as other states across the nation. We started working toward forming the Milford Education Foundation, realizing that education foundations are one way we could achieve our mission, “to promote excellence, innovation, and creativity in education for our children and community.” Since its founding in 2013, the Milford Education Foundation has made an impact on thousands of students, thanks to the programming and mini-grants that Milford Education Foundation has provided. Milford Education Foundation continues to provide these educational opportunities through our fundraising initiatives and in partnership with the Milford Public School system, PTA and other civic organizations, Making a positive difference in the lives of our children is what inspired me to be a founding member of the Milford Education Foundation, and is what continues to inspires me today.
