Milford, CT—October 21, 2013—The Milford Education Foundation held its First Annual Mini-Golf Classic at The Sports Center of Connecticut in Shelton on Saturday, October 19th. The sold-out event was attended by 150 golfers, over 20 volunteers and many spectators.

“We are so pleased with the turnout at our first fundraiser. The Milford Education Foundation began work just this summer and we are amazed at the support we are receiving from our community. We are going to be able to bring some fantastic educational events to Milford,” said James Maroney, President of the Foundation, “We’re looking forward to next year’s tournament!”

The winner of the 18-and-over tournament was Helen Williams who received a venerated tie-dyed jacket, a gold putter and a $25 gift certificate to SBC restaurant.

Many families came to enjoy the tournament or just play for fun. At right, Dr. Jennifer Ju shows off the tie-dyed jacket and gold club the winners received.

“We want to thank everyone who participated,” commented Jorge Santiago, Milford Education Foundation Co-Vice President and event coordinator, “Our volunteers, golfers and sponsors were all very supportive of MEF and had a wonderful time at the event. The attendance and money raised far exceeded our expectations.” Santiago also thanked the many local businesses who donated prizes and raffle items.

The funds raised from this event will help support activities such as the recently announced teacher mini-grants. The Milford Education Foundation will also be bringing the CT Invention Convention to Milford with winners of the local fairs attending the renowned event in Storrs in the spring. Minds In Motion, a half-day student enrichment program, featuring hands-on, interactive, fast-paced, high-interest workshops will be held on March 15, 2014 at Jonathan Law High School.

Major sponsors of the Milford Education Foundation Mini-Golf Classic were The Milford Bank, Hubbell Incorporated, and Mathnasium of Milford.

Desperate for a win over Foundation President James Maroney, Brian Smith first tried to bribe one of the Milford Education Foundation Mini Golf Classic volunteer score keepers and then attempted some distractions. (James still won.)

The day was a success not only because we exceeded our fundraising goals, but also because the families and volunteers had a wonderful time and made many memories. We can’t wait until next year!
